Inspection and maintenance requirements for fire extinguisher

The standards for the inspection and maintenance of fire extinguishers are set forth by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA.) The most current edition is NFPA 10: Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers. All of the technicians at Roma Hood and Kitchen Cleaning are certified to perform NFPA 10 service. New York state law and local fire districts have specific requirements for maintaining your fire extinguishers in good working condition. If you have a business or commercial operation, it’s particularly important that you strictly follow the rules and regulations to make sure you are in compliance with your local laws.

All types of fire extinguishers should be inspected at least once a year. The extinguisher is checked to make sure it has the correct pressure and volume of the extinguishing agent. This can be done by checking the pressure gauge and weighing the tank. We also make sure that the extinguisher is within the required hydrotest and internal maintenance intervals. Of course, we inspect it to make sure the extinguisher is in good condition, and all external parts are serviceable. With dry chemical and dry powder type extinguishers, there is a test called “fluffing” which we perform to make sure the powder is free-flowing and ready to use.

The technician will then attach a new tamper-proof seal around the pin and attach a yearly service tag, and you’re good to go for another year.

Fire extinguishers are also required to undergo periodic special maintenance which is referred to as the six-year maintenance.

A six-year maintenance inspection is required by fire code

Six-year maintenance inspections are similar in some respects to the annual inspection but are more detailed. The main difference is that during the six-year inspections, stored pressure fire extinguishers are emptied of their contents. A licensed professional must examine the mechanics, outlet hose, and delivery system, after which the extinguisher is refilled and re-pressurized and then marked with a tamper-resistant seal. These six-year inspections must be recorded on the regular hang tag and on a separate metallic label attached to the body of the extinguisher. Notations must include the month and date of the inspection, as well as the inspector's name.

Hydrostatic inspections are required at varying intervals. Five-year inspections are required for all pressurized water, carbon dioxide, and wet chemical extinguishers, while dry-chemical extinguishers must be inspected every 12 years. As part of doing a hydrostatic test, a six-year inspection and service are also performed.
